Mapua student dies in Cavite hazing..

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) - An 18-year-old engineering student died after going through a fraternity hazing in Trece Martires town, Cavite province on Thursday night.

Police said Ddaniel Lorenz Jacinto, a 2nd-year engineering student at the Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT), was already dead when brought to the MB Santiago Medical Center in Cavite.

Six other Mapua Institute students, who brought Jacinto's severly bruised body to the hospital, have been arrested by police.

The suspects were identified as John Arman Cencosa, Paulo Alvarez, Marco Paulo Sarlo, Emil John Villanueva, Ronnie Moso and Glenn Angelo Mansilya.

Investigators said the arrested students have repeatedly declined to tell the police details about the death of the victim.

Superintendent Danilo Buentipo, Trece Martires police chief, said the students will be charged for violation of the Anti Hazing Law.

'Dastardly act'

The MIT has denounced the hazing incident.

"Mapua's top officers have met with the parents of the victim and expressed their sympathy and condolences. They also stated their vow to investigate the case and take punitive action against the perpetrators of the dastardly act," a statement from the instutute, signed by Prof. Daniel Sauquillo, the school's Director for Student Activities and Discipline, said.

"Mapua bans fraternities and hazing of any kind. If the allegation of fraternity hazing proves to be true, it is very tragic that the violation of this ban has resulted in the death at such a young age of Daniel Jacinto, someone so full of promise and potential," it said.

"Such an act of violence has absolutely no place in academe. We call upon the Mapua community to rally and be vigilant against such deadly abberant behavior," it added. -- Reports from radio dzMM and Dominic Almelor, ABS-CBN News
